Tacoma Rainiers Week In Review, September 11-17

The Rainier wrap up their 12-game road trip today in Las Vegas, where the Sunday 12:05 start time comes earlier than anywhere else. Let’s get to our Week In Review.

We began by reviewing how a great series at Oklahoma City ended on a sour note.

Wednesday’s post went notebook-style, covering a number of smaller items surrounding the team.

Next we discussed the team breaking the Tacoma single-season franchise home run record.

Former Rainiers manager John Stearns passed away from cancer on Friday.

Yesterday we noted that the Rainiers road trip has hit a lull.

Today’s game wraps up the long road trip, and the Rainiers open the final homestand of the 2022 season on Tuesday at 6:05. It will be six games against the Round Rock Express – your last chance to catch some baseball at Cheney Stadium until next April, so hopefully you can make it out to the park.

YESTERDAY: Tacoma won a wild one at Vegas, 12-11. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit as the team totaled 17 knocks, four different players homered, and seven different players drove in runs. Jarred Kelenic went 3-for-4 with his team-leading 18th home run, Drew Ellis was 3-for-5 with a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Brian O’Keefe drove in four runs. Amazingly, Tacoma won a game in which one opposing player (Kevin Smith) went 5-for-5 with a cycle and two homers, and another opposing player (Matt Davidson) was 4-for-5 with two homers.

TODAY: Tacoma Rainiers (67-73) at Las Vegas Aviators (69-71), 12:05.

SEASON SERIES: Las Vegas leads, 14-9.

PITCHERS: LHP Justus Sheffield (6-7, 7.09) at LHP Zach Logue (3-4, 6.85)

ROSTER MOVES: Yesterday the Mariners ended Dylan Moore‘s rehabilitation assignment after just one game, calling him up to replace the injured Eugenio Suarez.

HOT HITTERSMason McCoy has reached base safely in 21 of his last 22 games, and he had a game-saving web gem in the ninth inning last night… Jonathan Villar has homered four times and driven in 11 runs during a nine-game hitting streak… Jarred Kelenic has a ten-game hitting streak, with 16 hits and only three strikeouts during the tear… Marcus Wilson has hit safely in five straight… Forrest Wall is 10-for-23 over his last six games.

OPPONENT NEWS: Las Vegas returns home from a 12-game road trip. It started in Reno, where the Aviators missed an opportunity to gain in the standings by losing four of six. They rebounded by going 4-2 at Sacramento… the Aviators don’t currently have any former Rainiers players, but they do still have the Lake Tapps native and Charles Wright Academy alum Nate MondouKevin Smith has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, including a cycle last night… 22-year-old Jordan Diaz was recently promoted to Triple-A, and he’s 7-for-17 with two homers and six RBI during this series… Matt Davidson has hit six homers in this series, and eight over his last nine games.
